The Donetsk region's having its own fuel and energy resources, nearness of the Krivbass ferrous ore deposit, rich network of motor-roads and railways, outlet to the sea, high level of urbanization contribute to unique terms for development of industry and active participation in the state and international division of labor.

Today industry of the Donetsk region in general develops quickly, enlarging the volume of production. The financial state of many enterprises improves.

Say, according to the results of the year 2001, the power complex displayed stabilization. In 2000, decrease of the volume of production of electric power was stopped. The situation changed because of improvement of paying discipline. Today almost all the branches, except the coal-mining one, pay for the used power. The problems of mutual payments still exist in the housing and municipal branch.

As for the coal industry, it has a number of problems to solve immediately. In 2001 the tendency of decrease of the volumes of coal mining lasted, especially in the mines producing the energetic coal. The volume of coal production at these mines fell from 17,1 to 11,7 million tons. But alongside with this, some measures were taken for raising the quality characteristics of coal.
