In the Donetsk region there are 5 theatres, the regional Philharmonic Society and
the Honored Song and Dance Ensemble of Ukraine "Donbas".
The Donetsk region theatres are:
The Donetsk state academic opera and ballet theatre named after A. Soloviyanenko, one of the leading theatres
of Ukraine;
The Donetsk academic Ukrainian musical drama theatre named after Artem;
The Donetsk regional Russian drama theatre (Mariupol);
The Donetsk regional theatre of young spectator (Makiivka);
The Donetsk regional puppet theatre.
The repertoire of the theatres is formed to satisfy various categories of spectators
of different age and tastes suggesting them performances on various topics, of various forms
and genres.
The titles of the best works of the world and native classic writers are on the
playbills of the theatres.
It is remarkable that theatre companies show great interest to the original works
of the Ukrainian theatre.
The theatres of the region regularly take part in the all-Ukrainian festivals of
theatre art, presenting their performances at such festivals as "Theatrical Donbas", "The inspector is coming
to us", the festival for children and youth "Golden Key", "Melpomena of Tavria", "Kherson amusements", "Ternopil
theatre nights", "Puppet meetings", "Golden voices of Ukraine".
The international festival "Ballet Stars" became a tradition. It is held in
Donetsk and provide for the opportunity to see the broad variety of classic and modern choreography, to get acquainted
with the creative achievements of famous dancers and ballet-masters, to show the art of our
actors.
The companies of the theatres make successful tours about Ukraine and Russia as
well as the USA, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the names of many actors are the pride of both their theatres and
the region at large.
The Donetsk regional Philharmonic Society is one of the largest in Ukraine as for
the number of creative groups and performers (about 300). Its concert hall bears the name of the famous composer
of the XXth century S. Prokofiev, born in Donechchyna. When S. Prokofiev's 60th birthday was celebrated, his name
was conferred on the symphonic orchestra of the Philharmonic Society. In 2002 the orchestra was awarded the title of
the academic one.
The Donetsk Philharmonic Society is well-known in Ukraine because of its unique
concert organ, which P.I. Chaikovsky played in the previous century. On the stage of the regional Philharmonic
Society the best musicians and performers of the XXth century played and performed.
The great work is being done by the company in the sphere of esthetic upbringing of
youth, and especially for "its contribution to spiritual upbringing" the group was awarded the prize of "Golden
Scythian".
Numerous festivals "The Prokofiev's Spring" including jazz, organ, chamber,
guitar, folk music made the Donetsk regional Philharmonic Society the center of artistic life in the South
of Ukraine.
The Honored Song and Dance Ensemble of Ukraine "Donbas" appears to be a visiting
card of Donbas. During the years of its existence it toured in almost all the parts of Ukraine, in Baltic countries,
in the Caucasus, in Moldova and Byelorussia, in the Far East and in Uzbekistan, in Poland, Romania, Spain, France,
Greece, Portugal.
The repertoire of the Ensemble is constantly enlarged with new highly artistic
works.
The ensemble constantly participates in all-Ukrainian and international folklore
festivals at which it numerously was a laureate.
