There are 7 higher artistic educational institutions in the Donetsk region: the State Musical Academy named after S.S. Prokofiev, the Musical Colleges in Artemovsk, Dzerzhinsk, Donetsk, Mariupol, the Artistic College and the College of Culture in Donetsk. Besides, there are 108 musical schools and schools of esthetic education.

The activities of the institutions of the system of cultural and artistic education and upbringing include consolidation of secondary education with upbringing, methodic work, competitions, out-of-school work, employment and development of the best existing forms of work and searching the new ones.

Serious attitude to creation of new forms of studying is a tradition in Donetsk, Artemivsk, Novoazovsk, Mariupol, Kramatorsk, Yenakieve, Khartsyzsk.

The regional studies methodic center of culture provides for assistance in raising the qualification of the teachers working in educational institutions.

Every year the interest to competitive directions of activities grows higher and higher. The majority of competitions are held in the framework of the National Programs „Children of Ukraine“ and „Youth of Donechchyna“. They include the regional children's „Competition of pianists at the homeland of S.S. Prokofiev“, the competition for the best performance of works for soloists with orchestra „Hope. Pride. Future“, the competition of young painters dedicated to A. Kuindgy, etc.

Besides the regional competitions the students of the artistic educational institutions take part in the All-Ukrainian and international competitions.

According to the decision of the Donetsk regional council and the order of the Head of the regional state administration, 20 stipends were provided for the financial support of the talented students of the artistic educational institutions, the winners of the All-Ukrainian and international creative competitions.
